The government has urged Kenyans to be careful while enrolling to universities, this is to ensure that no one is trapped by the laid trap of con-men.The Commission for University Education has shut down the Barack Obama University at Ndenderu village, Kiambu County for reportedly lacking proper accreditation.
Construction of the university, named after US President Barack Obama, is said to have started six months ago and it was yet to open its doors to students.
The commission’s chairman Prof Henry Thairu said that the university was operating illegally adding that anyone who wishes to run a university should follow laid down procedures.
“Kenyans are asked to be vigilant and not fall prey to institutions that are not accredited and want to profit from them in a cheap way,” he said.
According to University Act 2012 Section 13, a person wishing to establish a university in Kenya shall apply in writing to the commission in the prescribed manner for accreditation and the grant of a charter.
The commission is currently pursuing the owner of the institution who is said to be out of the country.
If arrested and found guilty, the University owner could be slapped with a fine of Sh1 million or two years in jail.
